Introduction

After the diagnosis of kidney cancer is made, it is “staged” based on a specific classification system. The staging helps determine both treatment and prognosis.

Renal Cell Carcinoma Staging

The most common cause of kidney cancer is renal cell carcinoma, which is responsible for 80-85% of the cases. Staging for renal cell is based on the size of the cancer and whether it has spread to surrounding areas or throughout the body.
  • Stage 1: Small tumor (< 7 cm), limited to one kidney, and no evidence of spreading.
  • Stage 2: Similar to Stage 1, but with a larger tumor (> 7 cm).
  • Stage 3: A tumor that has invaded the surrounded area or lymph nodes.
  • Stage 4: A very large and invasive tumor or metastasis.
*cm = centimeters
