Hyperlipidemia

Definition: The medical term for an elevated level of fat (lipids) in the blood. Lipids can include cholesterol, compounds of cholesterol, phospholipids, and triglycerides. It is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease, which is common in patients with kidney disease. It is also an important complication of excess protein loss in the urine (nephrotic syndrome).
